International shipping scams, part 2

Since I published my initial blog post about international/overseas shipping scams around six months ago, the number of people who've read it and responded has been greater than anything else I've ever posted.  It hasn't made any difference in the number of scam e-mails I continue to receive, but it has helped spread awareness, and it's provided a resource for people who get e-mails just like these and wonder whether they're legitimate.

Just for the heck of it, here are a few more of them.  (You might want to read my post International Shipping Scams first for background on how these scams work, how the scammers make money on them, and what some tell-tale signs of an international shipping scam e-mail are.)

Address:50/60 Norcal Road Warburton, Victoria Australia 3799 Phone (+03 ) 5967 3590 Fax (+03 ) 9873 7432

best regard,
Director
Bravo Group Company
I didn't respond to Arlin, but I thought that including a shipping address PLUS a phone and fax number in his e-mail was a very nice touch, as was the signature "Director, Bravo Group Company."

As before, note that Arlin conveniently has a shipping company that will handle pick-up and delivery.  Also note the e-mail address: scharlin8@gmail.com.  Doesn't it seem a little odd that a "company director" doesn't have a corporate e-mail address?  Like "aschneider@bravogroup.com" or something?  Just sayin' ...

And what "product" would he like to order?  He doesn't say.  That's because the only thing he's interested in right now is finding out whether I'm going to take the bait and respond.  Nothing else matters. Yet.

Subject:  INTERNATIONAL ORDER INQUIRY
From: "Robert Jones" (ogregg1@gmail.com)

Hello,

I want to place an international order from your company to my store in the Netherlands. I want to know if you can ship internationally and accept credit card as a form of payment? I Eagerly await to read back from you soon. Thank you and God bless you

De-Crown Store
Robert Jones
Again, note that in this case, the e-mail address ogregg1@gmail.com has absolutely no connection to either the supposed sender name, Robert Jones, or the supposed store name, De-Crown Store. (My guess is that ogregg1@gmail.com is an address for an account that's been hacked, but I won't pursue that here.)

Hello,
How're you?I want to place an international order from your company to our store in Amsterdam,The Netherlands.I want to know if you can ship internationally and accept credit card as a form of payment?I'd love you to reply me back and we can proceed further Eagerly await to read back from you and we can proceed Thank you and God bless you. Theresa Gullit (Mrs).
theresastores@AnyFreeEmailAccountProvider.com is another common ploy these scammers use to convey the impression that you are being contacted by an actual store owner.  You or I or anyone else could create a free gmail or hotmail or yahoo mail account using just about anything with "stores" tacked onto it, and have what appears to be a business e-mail address.  That doesn't mean it is, of course.  Just that it appears to be.

My response

Being more than a little annoyed that I received almost identical scam e-mails from both Robert and Theresa less than two weeks apart (and being particularly annoyed that both scam e-mails said "Thank you and God bless you" -- scammers have NO shame), I e-mailed both of them back with the same message.  To Robert I started by saying:
Subject:  RE: INTERNATIONAL ORDER INQUIRY
Frominfo@edgewatersoaps.com

To:  "Robert Jones"

Dear Robert:

It's so interesting that just a couple days ago, I received almost the exact same e-mail from someone who calls herself "Theresa Gullit" ...
[Then I cut and pasted in Theresa's entire e-mail message here -- and in my response to Theresa I cut and pasted in Robert's entire e-mail message here.  And in both responses, I said:]

I'm going to add both of you to my blog:
http://edgewatersoaps.blogspot.com/2012/12/international-shipping-scams.html

Edgewater Soaps
For obvious reasons, I never heard back from Theresa.  But about a week later, I did hear back from Robert:
Subject:   READ AND REPLY SOON

Hello
I am sorry for not responding your message all this days. I was busy at the workshop in New Zealand. Do let me know if you still interested in dealing with me.

Robert
Did Robert even read my response?  Not likely given that he still thinks there's a chance I might want to do business with him.  And clearly he didn't bother to click on the link to my blog.  He must have been really distracted by whatever was going on at that workshop in New Zealand!  Also note that now he's using de-crown.stores@hotmail.com as his e-mail address rather than ogregg1@gmail.

Will there be a Part 3?

Just today, before I published this follow-up post, I got a phone call from a small business owner who wanted to know whether I had ever received an e-mail from a Robert Jones in the Netherlands.  If I had, he said, he wanted to ask what my experience dealing with Mr. Jones had been.  He, the business owner, has been corresponding with Mr. Jones about an order and is starting to get suspicious.

We chatted, I told him the story above, he told me what has happened so far in his dealings with Mr. Jones, and then he said, "You know, if something comes out of this that's worth adding to your blog, would you be interested in including it?"

Didn't have to think very long about that one.  My response:

"YES!"

Update 06-26-2013:
There is now a Part 3, and it comes from a totally unexpected source!  Interested in knowing exactly how these scammers weave their webs to trap their victims?  See International Shipping Scams Part 3.

To read my initial post on this subject where I outlined in general terms how these shipping scams work and provided a list of my own rules and observations regarding international shipping inquiries, see International Shipping Scams.

  1. I just finished corresponding with Mr. Robert Jones from the Netherlands yesterday about an order! I am in Israel. You stopped him before he got to the scam part of business. I have the whole scam routine documented, including correspondence with his shipper. Contact me if you are interested in the details...

    1. Yes- We just received an email from Amelia as well. Part of the giveaway was she ordered 15 each of our product categories- didn't take the time to look close enough and order actual products we offer. Also all caps- super rush!!! Well international shipping doesn't work that way.

    6. We received the identical email 3 days ago from Achazia Badrick aka Achazia Organic Store. She sent an order list (everything in qty 20) from our site, totaling about $3000 USD and then proposed to use a shipper in the UK (with a gmail address, which is strange). I had already priced the cost of shipment via UPS and FedEx (including customs clearance) and their quote was 3x higher. She said they need to use their shipper because she's in a "remote part of the city" (Madrid). Chueca is not remote. So that set off my BS detector, I did a search and ended up here. Thanks so much for posting this!

  6. I've been corresponding with Mandy Harrison supposedly from the Netherlands. The address she gave Nieuwestad 123d, 8911 CPLeeuwarden, Netherlands, is close to The Body Shop store in Netherlands, which is 123A Nieuwestad (clever). However, there is no 123d Nieuwestad. (Hmm, now why would The Body Store need my products??) I did send prices for the items she wanted but decided to do more research before going further. Thanks for reporting this on your site!

    1. One option for reporting scams & scammers such as this is the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), which can be accessed here:
      http://www.ic3.gov/complaint/default.aspx
(If this doesn't show up as a link, just copy and paste the URL into your browser's address bar.)
You can also report scam e-mails by forwarding them to the Federal Trade Commission at spam@uce.gov.

  8. Thank you Edgewater soaps for publishing this forum. We also received inquiries from the Netherlands, from AnMa Natural Stores and then through their affiliated freight company MoveIt Freight LLC. The freight company advises they are out of the UK yet use an LLC suffix, US corporate suffix. An immediate flag. Both companies have no registered address or phone numbers available. We have asked them for all their business details to track them. Stay away from these business and err on the side of caution. If it is to good to be true, it is usually correct, it is to good to be true. Below is a sample of what they sent us in and email, "The $849.66 CND that will be sent to the shipping agent is for the shipping of my order plus other items i ordered from different countries which will be deducted from my credit card. Also, I'm compensating you with the sum of $100 CND for the transfer fee and for surcharge. Please note that i should have given the shipping agent my credit card for him to deduct the shipping funds but He told me that he doesn't have the facilities to charge or debit credit card at the moment,so that's why i bring my vote of confidence in you and i don't want you to betray the vote of confidence i put in you. I want you to transfer the funds to him after you have make the charges and the money charged from my credit card has cleared your account, then you can now make the transfer to the agent via western union. I will have love to do this my self but there no Western union here around me,So the charges you'll make on my credit card will be:" Again, many thanks to Edgewater Soaps for publicising this information. We are also a small niche artisian business, www.getemon.com Be wary and conduct good business with good people. Wishing you all great success.

  9. Thank you for highlighting these scams Edgewater Soaps. We too have been offered immediate credit card payments from the Netherlands, well what seems to them, through AnMa Natural Products, and also their affiliate MoveIt Freight LLC. MoveIt is meant to be a UK company but uses a US LLC suffix, so red flags immediately. They offer no contact numbers, no web sites and there are no address's or histories of these business's. Below is an extract from one of the emails. Be wary of these scams and do not conduct business with them. "The $849.66 CND that will be sent to the shipping agent is for the shipping of my order plus other items i ordered from different countries which will be deducted from my credit card. Be wary of these frauds and work with the great customers, not the fraudsters. It's exciting when someone asks to place an order. Get all their details, find out everything, and remember the next bus will be along in 10 minutes, don't jump on the wrong bus.

  11. Thank you so much for this detailed blog post. I found it by Googling the subject line of the 2nd email we received from a suspicious international buyer. Looks like they're still at it.. this time using the name Mary Emanuel and a shipping address in Switzerland. Their English has much improved and they haven't mentioned a 3rd party courier... yet... otherwise the scam would be obvious. However, there were still some red flags, a hotmail address - comma usage, formatting, odd opening and closing statements, etc. So far I'd given them the benefit of the doubt but seeing entire sections of text which are almost identical to those posted here, it's now clear that I've wasted my time.

  20. I just had this same scam on my candle business....however they were smart enough this time to list an actual store that does exsist with legitimate address & website. The initial contact email was pretty much word for word as all the others, yet since I did google the store Hetkunstgemaal in Bronhorst, The Netherlands and it did exsist I wasn't skeptical until they sent me credit cards registered in the US...luckily intuit contacted me immediately and the credit card companies and reported it. I then contacted HetKunstgemaal and guess what they never heard of the person (Niamh Traynor). Here are the emails associated with the newest scam:
    Niamh Traynor <hetkunstgemaal@gmail.com
    Robert Elwyn <cargoteam.intbv@gmail.com
    Zoe Thomson or Wayne <xzoe87@gmail.com

    1. We received the same e-mails with our products listed asking me to ship them before using their CC, I kept telling the person to do the transaction online as we don't do offline transactions. The minute I mentioned fraud I never heard back.

  24. Thank you! I too, came to this site after googling "arianastores80@gmail.com". She emailed us looking for bulk quantities of soaps from our store at chickadeesoaps.com.

I appreciate the heads up, and saving me the heartache of losing money to a scam. Thank you!

  25. I received this exact same email today. Unbelievable that people would be so awful to small business owners!!

  26. Thank you so much for adding this to you blog too. I likely would have been scammed without it.

  27. I am SO glad I came across this article. I was getting very wary about a company with the email address:
    ArianaStores80@gmail.com
and their emails - These are the EXACT same emails I see listed in this article. When I received the email today saying they wanted me to get a quote from their shipper I was almost convinced something funky was happening. (it was odd enough that they asked for a price quote when you can get one from my website, I thought maybe they were just lazy).
Good thing I took the time to look into this.
Thank you for your info - it saved me several hundreds of dollars and a HUGE headache!

  29. I received one from elenesosostore (Elena Romanchkes) with shipping agent luckyfastfreightllc@gmail.com (Adam SHENEGEN). Accused me of calling them a scammer, seemed legitimate, paid for order, ordered product then received chargeback from credit card used a week later. Luckily I'm not out any money as product is being returned. I did a google search on both names and came up empty handed but went along with it since they "paid". Moving foward, doing more research to confirm international orders or will re-evaluate shipping procedures.
