exactly what happens when a business owner pursues, in good faith, the sales opportunity one of these e-mails appears to present.
Rosa had been corresponding with a scammer who calls himself "Robert Jones" of De-Crown Stores in the Netherlands (who has also tried to scam me), and after reading one of my previous blog posts on this subject, Rosa offered to send me the entire chain of e-mail messages in her correspondence with him. They show, step-by-step, exactly how shipping scammers attempt to con their targets into paying for shipping to a retail business that doesn't exist, using a shipping company that also doesn't exist.
The Initial Contact
In Rosa's case, the initial inquiry was made through the "Contact Us" form on her website, not through an e-mail. Here's the text of the e-mail notification she received:
Someone submitted the form from your 'Contact Us' pageInterestingly, this is not the same as the e-mail I received from Robert Jones. But it's almost exactly the same as a recent e-mail I received from someone who calls herself/himself Theresa Gullit:

On the one hand, it might be what he uses for his business. But on the other, it might only be a free e-mail account that looks like a business e-mail address. This will come up again later on.

I point this out for the simple reason that it doesn't quite make sense. And things like this that don't quite make sense -- even little things -- are another tell-tale sign that you're dealing with a scammer, not a legitimate customer.

Here's where it starts to get interesting. Robert the scammer wants Rosa to use his preferred shipping company. I've bolded the key elements in his e-mail and will summarize them below.

- Robert has been offered free shipping but apparently doesn't want it (!) because he's had lots of problems receiving things that were shipped to him
- For that reason, he has a reliable shipper that he always uses
- Robert wants Rosa to contact his shipping company for a price quote that includes pick-up and delivery
I know that Rosa sensed there might be something fishy about all this from the start, but she also wanted to give Robert the full benefit of the doubt. She decided to continue negotiating in good faith until the transaction was either successfully concluded, or until it was clear beyond a shadow of doubt that Robert was up to no good. In her next response, she gently but clearly indicates that she's a little leery by asking Robert whether he actually intends to place an order, and by asking him for a link to his store.

My advice – based on years of export from Israel – is that you let me ship the goods with EMS, which is special delivery, tracked and insured via the Israel postal authority. They are very good. Also, I would not charge you shipping, as per the quotation.
My suggestion is that you pay for just the goods, I will receive them from the different sources, repack them as efficiently as possible and send them to you at my expense, insured.
I have not had any problems shipping to Amsterdam.

But note that Robert has changed the story line. Remember earlier when he was so eager to have Rosa's products in his store for his numerous customers? Well apparently he forgot that he wasn't actually ordering them for his store, he was ordering them for a particular customer. And that customer is actually in Nigeria, not the Netherlands.
I've omitted a number of e-mails in the series here, but the important point from them is that Rosa is not comfortable with Robert's insistence that she use his preferred shipping company and contract with them directly. If Robert wants to use his own shipping company, fine, but he should treat the purchase of products and the payment for shipping as two separate transactions: he should contract with Rosa for her products, and he should contract with his shipping company for pick-up and delivery.
As a professional courtesy, however, Rosa asks Robert's shipping company for a quote.

This is one of two absolutely key parts of a scam like this, because when you send money through Western Union, you pay in cash and the money is GONE. There are no refunds. You can't stop payment on a wire transfer the way you can on a check.
And guess what. The shipping company only accepts payment through Western Union. In advance, of course.
The following e-mail from the shipping company is long, so I've bolded the critical part.

- Robert tried to pay the shipper with his credit card, but it turns out the shipping company isn't able to accept credit card payments at the moment
- Therefore, Robert wants to pay Rosa in full for the order and the shipping using his credit card, and he is willing to trust that once "the money charged from my credit card is in your account," Rosa will pay his shipper via Western Union and send the products
- Robert would love to be able to pay the shipping bill himself via Western Union, "but there no Western Union/Money Gram here"
But also note how Robert tries to spin this so it sounds like he's the one taking the risk by paying Rosa upfront with his credit card and trusting that she will follow through on paying his shipping company.
Enter the Fraudulent Credit Card Number
This brings us to the other key part of the scam.
Robert will use a credit card number that's been stolen, obtained by computer database hackers, or "phished," and the charge will be approved. But that does not mean the money is "in your account." The charge will be approved only because the rightful credit cardholder does not yet know that a fraudulent charge has been made on his/her card, and the cardholder won't know this until he/she receives the next bill.
In the meantime, a business owner who doesn't realize that this is a scam will go ahead and pay the shipping company -- which is really the scammer -- via wire transfer. And there is no doubt in my mind that having succeeded once, a scammer like Robert Jones will immediately want to place a second, larger order while the business owner is still under the impression that he's a legitimate customer, and while the credit cardholder is still unaware of the bogus charges.
What many small business owners like me don't fully appreciate is that while consumers have protections against fraudulent charges made on their cards, business owners have very few protections against fraudulent charges they've accepted. If and when Robert Jones's charge is successfully contested by the rightful cardholder, the business owner will end up with nothing and lose every penny he or she paid for shipping.
Did Rosa Get Scammed?
Rosa did not respond to Robert's last e-mail as promptly as the others, because at this point the nature of the scam was clear to her beyond any shadow of doubt. Robert, meanwhile, is getting a little anxious because he's right on the verge of scoring a nice chunk of change, so he follows up with another e-mail:

I would have lost even more money if I didn't become very suspicious and put all the info together. He even had the gall to pass himself off as a "religious" person. He'll get his due from that end one day. On top of that he even knew I worked for the "police".

All the same things as all of you said but this time the scammer didn't order something big at first and he didn't mention anything about international shipping at first. I'm a new business owner and just starting out. I didn't get suspicious at first. So I made the deal. I accepted the funds from him. Then he came back and tried to order double and told me that 13 of his "friends" were going to place an order too. That's when the shipping company came into play and money transfer. DeleteThe usual tactic to my knowledge is that they place a modest order first, and then immediately want to place a much larger order if the first one went through successfully.
However you accepted the payment, you first need to find out what you're responsible for and what, if anything, you can do about having accepted a fraudulent charge. Call your bank ASAP, explain everything that happened in detail, and let them advise you.
I've had Joan Wilfred contacting me since last week, we got to the stage where she asked me to contact her shipping company and that's when I found this blog. Thank you so much for writing it, I would never have gone ahead with it but I'm glad I can be sure this is a scam and will be even more careful in the future.

Sometimes it pays to be suspicious ... and always it pays to do some research. "Briana" is obviously the same scammer as "Robert Jones." The same reference to the store's "numerous customers." The exact same format for listing the products he/she wants to purchase. The same "God bless you" crap ... but I'm glad you found the blog, too. Thanks for your contribution.

She wants over £400 of my stock and I did give her the benefit of the doubt by responding to her email then she gave me her delivery address which after investigation turned out to be the tropical museum of Amsterdam!
That was enough to show me this was a scam and after hitting Google I found this page which revealed all and the similarities were unbelievable.
Thanks goodness I never delivered any stock!
Its scary when you realise what lengths these people will go to!

Long live the web! It stopped me cold in my tracks... and for good. Sad to even imagine how many struggling small businesses could be hit by The Clovis Scam.

Figured it was a scam but wanted to give them a chance, not think bad of everyone. As soon as they said for me to pay I cut communication. After notifying the buyer about shipping, he claimed a 'Unauthorized Credit Card Use' on Paypal.Unfortunately, the package was already delivered to him (Australia) and, because he called his Credit Card Company, not Paypal, it was irrelevant that I had all the necessary documents: proof of shipping, tracking number and even a proof of delivery with his signature!! The Credit Card company demanded his money back and Paypal took the money from me!
Sadly, I lost my merchandise, I lost the money... there is no place for me to report it!
Wow! That IS a shocker, but I don't quite understand how this happened. You're saying that after he paid you for the products and shipping through PayPal, he contacted his credit card company to report that the charge was unauthorized and PayPal accepts no responsibility for having processed and approved a payment that could be cancelled at whim? I'm not quite getting how this happened. Please provide more detail!

DeleteA bit late to this party, but here is my .02:
I can confirm that this is true and the very same thing happened to me. And I am --I think-- in the process of experiencing the same scam again, which is what brought me here.
Apparently, the key thing to look for is whether or not paypal tells you in the confirmation email that this order is eligible for buyer protection. If they flag it as ineligible (which is done in red ink on the website) then the small business owner is NOT covered, even if you have full proof (as I did) that the item was delivered to the buyer.
If you don't see this information in your confirmation email from paypal right after the order has been placed, go onto the website and check your orders. It will say there whether or not this particular purchase is covered.

ReplyDeleteI received an email this morning from "Mariah Michelle" wanting to place an order for her "customers" - I sent through an order sheet and received it back with a large order for 120 x "10" of certain soap varieties, so I sent another reply email asking if they were 10 logs or 10 individual cakes of soap - I'm waiting now for her reply but................ we send our soap to different countries and have had customers purchase then send to their family in the Netherlands, so it didn't concern me at first to get this order but something just didn't seem right. I couldn't find her shop online or the address in the Netherlands, started a search and found this blog - so happy I did - the address in the Netherlands given to me is:

This was tricky as well because there is a Marich Confectionery Company (part of the name used in their email address) in the states and they have blog sites also - wonder if they know their name is being use like this????

2) I will need to have a copy of your business license and import paper work prior to doing business with you.

THANK YOU for posting this! Although I spent several hours putting together a shipping quote for the Netherlands, I became suspicious when I saw the name of the shipping company. When I googled it, there was no such name, but googling the email address yielded your blog! Oh, thank you for keeping me from wasting any more precious time...as a small business owner time is at a premium during the summer season.

They said that they were fine with that.... then came the increased order quantity then the "use their shipper"... The uppercase subject line is a giveaway for us as well as ending the emails with God bless...
ReplyDeleteI googled their store name and asked if they had a website or facebook page... of course they are a new company and don't have any of that... ultimately it was the shipping issue that did it. So I googled: transInlandexpressfreightllc@fastservice.com - which was the email that we were supposed to send the information to. I said we only ship using UPS, FedEx or DHL...
This was from Amelia Faas - email: evergreenstoreltd@gmail.com - in case anyone googles this information this will show up.
We finally told them "No thank you. Goodbye" but this was their reply when we asked about the name of their store.

I want you to proceed and e-mail my carrier an estimate of the shipping weight and dimension and they'll also get back to you with the cost.

So I got a different name and also an address in London where this email is registered. The website does not exist. I looked up address and it looks like a sketchy house in east London.

I am really happy I came across this blog and know my husband and I are not the only ones who have been fooled by these people. We run an online store, and had a potential customer from the Netherlands named Mandy wanting items for her store. Of course we thought great, but after a few interactions with her, and her wanting to use some bogus shipping company we realized something was off. Who wants to pay over $740 for shipping? Upon research I found this page and of course the emails were almost identical. Thank you for sharing this, it really helped us out.

As a small company, I do get orders requesting credit card payment on occasion, so that wasn't a red flag initially, but the subsequent $1k order request (in the identical format as the ones referenced above) was enough to make me suspicious. Identifying information includes the name the scammer used, the name of the fake business, the scammer's email address, the scammer's shipping address, the name of the scammer's shipping company, the name of the contact person at the fake shipping company, the email address for the fake shipping company ... and so on. This blog has been helpful to you and others only because commenters have provided the latest info on details like this. If you've got any new information, please share!
Thank you for this information. I have run in to these scammers for a second time. It is strange to me that they want to place a large order without asking for samples (red flag). What I do is to ask for payment in advance. Also, for ligit int'l orders, it is a good idea to allow a couple days to pass before shipping goods.

Thank you for posting this. As a small business owner it has saved me a headache. I was so excited that someone overseas was interested in ordering my products...and such a large order. Red flags did pop up but you try to give people the benefit of the doubt. I did my due diligence and did my research. This is the email I received from the "customer" and the "shipping" company.

I got the same e-mail, Jusine Streuvals. I almost fell for it too. I had the box packed and was just waiting for payment. She did give me her credit card and it went through and said approved. She wanted me to head straight down yesterday and wire the money to her shipper. I told her I would wait until the next day. When I got up I called my bank, money wasn't there. I called the merchant. They said since it was such a large order they needed to get approval first to make sure it was valid. I contacted Justine told her I needed an approval, Justine sent me a couple more e-mails asking me to send that money. I informed her as a business person I would not proceed until I knew this was valid.
DeleteUpdate, I am very happy I took the extra precaution. I do believe that Justine is a man. I wasn't about to send money without making sure that I had the money in my account. Gut feeling told me to make sure I checked it out even after the credit card was approved. Anyone who wanted to rush money over western union should be red flagged. This was the response from the shipping and red flag if the shipping company was in the UK, than money should have went there. so here is the e-mail from shipping:

It tells me these crooks are in the U.S I contacted the Ic3 right away. Could have been a easy bust but never heard back from them.
This is also credit card fraud. Justine still tried to get me to wire the money but as soon as I told her it was red flagged, I never heard back. Please just remember if a card is approved for a large amount, don't assume it is a valid transaction and make sure it's verified and in your account before proceeding.

After putting much time and effort into assembling the order, calculating shipping rates, and several emails back and forth, have now received the email requesting me to contact her shipper at transinlandexpressfreightllc@fastservice.com with customer # QP34561988A to obtain a quote from them.
This began to sound suspicious, so I Googled the shipper name and found only a lame Facebook page with 2 broken English postings in the past 2 years. I then Googled Andrea Henderson and found this posting. Thanks again!
Am going to contact Facebook in the hopes the fraudulent shipper's page will be removed.

I make and sell quilts online. I do ship international and all they have to do is purchase/pay and go thru the normal buying steps and I wouldn't have gotten suspicious. In fact I just shipped a quilt to Canada today and the customer simply purchased and paid without the suspicious email. I'm glad I google searched "mandy store in Belgium".

We got the same emails. Ours came from Jacob Egbert and the shipping company is Trans-Inland Express Freight LLC. We were planning to use a one-time credit card authorization form to get the credit card information without actually charging the card. Then we were going to call the issuing company to alert them that the card info was probably stolen. At least we could help out the person they stole the cc number from. But "Jacob" stopped emailing us. I guess he figured out we were trying to hustle him back.

I became suspicious of the first one which was ashley cole, then i received this second one! scammers.. Im sure he wont contact me regarding anything else now that i wont use his freight company!
ReplyDeleteJust got the one for James Smith at Titan in GERMANY. These are total scams. Never/ever entertain accepting international orders for credit card payment. We only accept wire PERIOD. That will shut them down. These guys are slightly more sophisticated, at least they don't tell you they want to order your products then admit they know nothing about your line because they need you to send a pricelist, etc. LOL. I get one of these every week.

I received a request for 900 bars of soap from Jason Palmer @managerpalmer@gmail.com to be shipped to his wife's store in Australia. His address is in Fort Collins, Colorado. I questioned him and he said that he and his wife purchase soap from different countries and import into Australia and handle all the necessary paperwork without any issues. He also said after I questioned him that a friend had recommended our soap and he had seen it and liked the quality and presentation. I was told that when the shipment was ready he would have his shipper pick up which was not unusual to me as I have clients that do that. So once the order was ready I emailed him. He forwarded a copy of an email he sent to his freight carrier. The freight carrier's email was FMLShipping@email.com. That didn't make sense to me. He called me to tell me that he needed me to send him a new invoice with the shipping amount on it because the freight carrier needed me to pay the shipping and Jason would pay me so I could pay the freight carrier. I told him that I felt very uncomfortable at that point and the transaction now was feeling very much like the scams that come across my desk. He got flustered and told me his brother just came in and he would call me back and hung up. A few minutes later I receive an email from the freight carrier with the the shipping quote of $3500.00. There was no contact information on the shipping quote and in bold was a statement that freight for international orders must be paid by wire transfer from the shipping location. Jason Palmer has made no additional contact and I have unpacked the order. If I knew of somewhere to report this guy I would do so straight away.

My first funny feeling is that when asking her to provide her business details so I could send her a wholesale price list, she immediately emailed me with an order and did not provide any details. Just an address in the Netherlands.
When googling the address, I found this site - thank you!
The size of her order would make a massive difference to my family, however to not be ripped off and lose out completely is my much preferred outcome.

I too have been in dealing with "HANNES ARNES" and the infamous trans inland freight... I just ended all communication with them, as they were emailing non stop trying to get me to reply back about finalizing the order. I've recorded everything and sending it to the fbi links listed in above comments. I CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR POSTING THIS! !!! These people should be ashamed of themselves and can't see how they can look at themselves in the mirror each day knowing what they're trying to do to honest hard working people! AGAIN, THANK YOU!

I am in South Africa ad have received two mails VERY similar in nature asking for orders. The fact that they do not order directly off the site and had pretty bad spelling was a tip off to me mut in good faith I replied and got as far as sending an invoice for the one on in Spain but I am still waiting to see what the one in Switzerland is going to do with my response

Found this site and immediately blocked/spam. Thanks for sharing your story with other businesses.I will be sure to pass this info on to every business owner I know as well.

ReplyDeleteI, too, get these things constantly and for years now. Between my husband and myself, we own three small businesses, all with websites. Several yrs ago, I was contacted by one who wanted to book our fishing charter and lodge for 25 "corporate officers" but wanted to me to collect and then pay for their car service that would bring them here. Of course, the car service had some BS issue why he couldnt pay them himself. I just told him "Sorry but I dont collect on behalf of any other businesses" and that I was sorry I couldnt accomodate them. He tried for DAYS to get me to do it anyway. THey are very pushy and seem desperate to get their hands on whatever fee they try to get you to Western Union (and it is ALWAYS Western Union). Do not fall for it nor give in to the intense pressure. Thank you for this blog because those of us honest people who are just trying to run our small businesses have to stick together and share the information on things like this!

ReplyDeleteMy particular scammer's name was Christa Palmer, and the fake courier service was called Smooth Convey - which has a fairly realistic looking website at www.smoothconvey.com - but it's 100% fake. Thanks so much for helping to keep us small business owners informed!
I just got scammed from this very person Christa Palmer trying to use Smooth Convey. I tried to do some research on the shipping company but because of their generic name tons of stuff came up that wasn't about them. Today I put the name in quotations and found this blog. I ship overseas pretty much every day but always use USPS so the overseas thing didn't raise a red flag for me. Kicking myself now for not catching on sooner, but I guess it could've been worse. Didn't actually lose merchandise, just the shipping costs.

"She" responded with a big list of items for a quote. I got suspicious and Googled the address and finally the name "Christa Palmer" and thank goodness found this blog confirming my suspicions to be correct before we went ahead with anything. I just got this person Jane Williams emailing me from wjstores16@gmail today. And was referred by Patricia Janne from JP Stores at jpstores01@gmail I'm glad I'm seeing all of this. I knew a big order was too good to be true! As much as I want it to be real my gut kept telling me no. I sent Patricia an invoice for a total $2000+ with the $880 shipping charge included. I told her I couldn't make my products until the amounts has cleared. But what got me was when I asked the shipping company for a quote .. I just said Reno Nevada and they came back with an address for where my PO Box is located at the UPS store. I never gave them the location I would ship from. So someone is really looking through the websites. Praying on small businesses is messed up. And for such a large order for me I don't even have that on stock and I would have to spend money to order what I need to complete this. This is just crazy.
